Crack Down on Crime

Narrator: It's another murder!. The police don't have any strong suspects, but they do have the murder weapon. Wouldn't it be great if they also had a handy crime fighting tool that could quickly narrow their man hunt? Dr. Larry Farwell thinks he has just what they need, a brain wave machine that separates the innocent from the guilty.

Dr. Farwell: What does the brain say? The information is there in the brain.

Narrator: A brain wave machine? It's dead serious to the CIA which has been funding Farwell's research for several years. There's other interest too.

Dr. Farwell: I have worked in an unofficial capacity with the FBI.

Narrator: In fact in a test of 20 subjects Farwell hit the bulls eye every time by picking all 17 who were FBI agents and 3 who were not.

Dr. Farwell: We've run over 100 subjects in the last year. We've gotten the correct answer in every case.

Narrator: How will Farwell convince the police his system works? He used a computer, custom software, mathematics, and the brain's own electrical response called a MERMER to ferret out the innocent and the guilty.

Dr. Farwell: Every time a significant event happens, and committing a major crime is a significant event, there is a comprehensive record of the event stored in the brain. Simply sit a person down in front of a computer screen, show him some words or pictures. If he didn't commit the crime he wouldn't even know which ones were relevant. But when a guilty person sees the murder weapon, the brain immediately recognizes it and the computer catches and records it before he can fake a response.

Narrator: Could a really clever criminal outsmart it?

Dr. Farwell: Well, I can't and I invented it.

Narrator: The brainwave breakthrough is actually similar to another crime fighting tool, DNA profiling. It links what is stored in the brain to the crime scene like other bodily evidence such as blood or semen are linked to the crime scene.
